ActionSA has written to Ekurhuleni Mayor Ngodwana, once again requesting him to urgently make wholesale changes to his Mayoral Committee to save the City from total collapse. Whilst the City fails to deliver basic services, the puppet Mayor continues to be led by the EFF which claims to care for the poor but governs solely via patronage networks.
Beginning with controversial MMC Dunga, the EFF Gauteng Chairperson, who in October was embroiled in a deadly blue light crash, has yet to answer conclusively whether he fitted a private vehicle with blue lights. Added to this, the Finance MMC also facilitated new security tenders worth billions despite a council resolution to adopt insourcing instead.
The new MMC for Waste Management, Cllr Manamela, is currently overseeing a department which is failing to collect waste. This is after he was fired as the MMC of Energy, Water & Sanitation in October when ActionSA wrote to Mayor Ngodwana to remove him for poor performance.
The MMC for Energy, Water and Sanitation, Cllr Msane, is also failing in her role. Regular water outages continue to occur across the City, and in some areas water tankers have not been deployed as a direct result of service providers not being paid by the City.
Better Bedfordview, a local community upliftment organisation, announced on 10 October that its committee has run out of patience with the increasing number of water leaks in and around our streets.
The EFF Speaker of Council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, is currently parading as an 11th MMC, using her office’s resources, which are meant to capacitate councillors and hold the Executive to account, for PR stunts. ActionSA sees this for what it is- clear overreach.
Mayor Ngodwana must do right by residents and remove the EFF from critical roles to get the City back on track.
