On Monday, October 30, 2023, at 15h05, officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) intercepted two male suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, and suspected stolen goods in the Etwatwa area.
During a crime prevention operation in the Etwatwa/Daveyton areas, EMPD officers stopped and searched a suspicious white Chevrolet Utility light delivery vehicle (LDV) with two male occupants, aged 21 and 28, on Eiselen Street. Upon inspection of the suspects and the vehicle, officers discovered two unlicensed 9mm firearms, identified as Girson and Nikson models, with intact serial numbers. Additionally, thirteen live rounds were found, along with eight different brands of smartphones and a 55-inch smart TV wrapped in a black sheet. The duo failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and were subsequently handcuffed and taken to the Etwatwa police station.
The apprehended individuals, facing charges of ‘possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition’ as well as ‘possession of suspected stolen goods,’ are set to appear in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court shortly. The LDV used to transport the suspicious items was impounded and secured at the police station for safekeeping.
