The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has noted, with great shock, the incident that took place in Johannesburg where a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) law enforcement officer and a South African Police Services (SAPS) law enforcement officer were involved in a fatal scuffle.
The primary duty of all law enforcement agencies and their officials is to ensure peacekeeping in all communities and as such, they cannot be seen to be instigators of acts of violence that lead to a breach of law and order in society due to their inability to act within the bounds of the oath of office they undertook when joining the police force.
All law enforcement agencies must ensure that the officers hired by the state are given mandatory counselling, undergo rigorous tests, and have to comply with routine psychological therapy sessions to not only curb anger outbursts such as these but to also manage the possibility of police brutality and excessive force when the law is being administered in the society.
The Ministry of Police must launch an investigation into the events that led to this dreadful display of unorderly conduct that may find its way into the social fibre of this already broken society of ours.
