The City of Ekurhuleni has allocated R2 million towards the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) for the 2021/2022 adjusted budget financial year which was recently approved by the council.
The allocation which is in the form of Grant In Aid is directed towards the welfare of animals across the nine SPCA branches in the City.
Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Corporate, Legal and Shared Services Cllr Ruhan Robinson conducted a site visit on Monday, 28 February at the Boksburg SPCA branch to assess their needs.
Boksburg SPCA officials Vicky Finnemore and Willie Du Plessis informed the MMC that the grant-in-aid would contribute to the upkeep of the facilities across the Ekurhuleni Region.
The critical needs that will be addressed by the allocated budget include the expansion of the roll-out of the immunisation programme of dogs, protection of stray dogs, medication, nutrition and the massive roll-out of the educational campaigns on animal cruelty.
“There is a great number of animal lovers within the community of Ekurhuleni. As such, it remains the responsibility of the local government working together with institutions such as the SPCA and members of the community to guarantee the safety and health of animals by providing all the support needed including financial support. A win for the animals is a win for the community,” said Cllr Robinson
In addition, MMC Robinson encouraged members of the community to adopt animals from the SPCA to provide them with a stable home. The MMC further condemned the criminal acts of animal cruelty, particularly the dog fight challenges.
