Scores of entrepreneurs gathered to get first-hand information on how the Township Retail Cluster Programme, launched at Sam Ntuli stadium in Thokoza on 8 August will benefit local businesses.
The entrepreneurs who gathered at the stadium for the launch were pleased to learn of the opportunities the programme brings.
The City of Ekurhuleni MMC for Finance and Economic Development, Cllr Fanyana Nkosi expressed his gratitude to the Gauteng Government for spearheading the development of the township economy.
“Today’s event is a classic example of how the partnership between local and provincial governments can generate public value.
“Local businesses will now move from being a synonym for carwashes and barbecue outlets to being potential mega job creators,” MMC said.
During the launch, Gauteng Premier David Makhura announced that R100 million has been set aside to fund businesses in the townships. The fund will assist to transform spaza shops into convenience retail stores that are based in the townships.
Whilst the Premier stated the importance of residents supporting businesses where they reside, he encouraged the local entrepreneurs to be organised in a form of business forums or associations in order to benefit from the funding available to boost the township economy.
Businesses operating in Ekurhuleni are further encouraged to visit the city’s website on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za to apply for trading permits and apply for business licences.
