City Raises Awareness on Diabetes, calls for early detection
The City of Ekurhuleni commemorated the World Diabetes Day yesterday at the Daveyton Main Clinic. One of the key messages that was shared with the people was a reminder that Diabetes remains the second leading cause of death in South Africa, after Tuberculosis according to Statistics South Africa’s Mortality and Causes of Death report.
While this may be the case, experts have made it clear that diabetes can be managed if diagnosed early and the patient does not default on treatment.
Some of the ailments that are attributable to untreated diabetes are blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, and feet and illnesses affecting the nervous system.
Nonhlanhla Maseko, an Ophthalmic Nurse at Daveyton Main Clinic urged diabetes patients to be careful when cutting their nails, especially the feet.
Diabetes patients are advised that cutting the toenails needs a special skill. You need to start cutting the nails from both the urges, then cut in the middle. While doing this, patients are warned to make sure that there are no injuries. Diabetic people must avoid injuries as some may not heal.
