Team Asidlali Nawe from Phumula hosted a youth day charity event, where they were raising funds for their team. The cycling event was a success as businesses such as Yellow Pepper was part of the event. They contributed by offering food to cyclists and everyone that attended.
Ekurhuleni Cycling Club came to show their support, and all cyclists took part in a 65km ride in celebration of youth day and raised funds for the team. All the young cyclists took a 31km ride and the seniors took a 65km route.
Secretary and Safety Officer, Boitumelo Mokoena was responsible for escorting, providing first aid hydration, and ensured that everyone was on time. She mentioned that the purpose of the project was to empower the youth.
“This event is aimed at building the youth and raising awareness that there are different routes that can be taken besides being on drugs and doing other wrong things. Young people can cycle and train so that they do not get bored.”
“We are trying to raise funds for the new team members or members of the community, who are beginners in the team. We are trying to support them with training equipment and bikes because this sport is perceived as an expensive sport, so we are trying to show and motivate the youth of this community to take part or rather be part of our team,” Mokoena added.
Tefo Tsoanyane, member of the team Asidlali Nawe said; “The event aimed at uniting the youth, and it encourages people to be active. I have always loved bikes, and attending these events allows me to do what I love.”
Tefo added that he has been part of the team since December 2021.
Participants received refreshments after the ride and had a chance to catch up and celebrate youth day.
