Carol Olerato Manyaapelo, a political analyst at Mafikeng FM, a former member of the student campus council in North-West University (NWU’s) and a post-graduate in the University of Johannesburg runs a campaign that empowers and provides sanitary towels to young women.
Carol started this initiative during her first year of varsity in NWU because she wanted to help young girls who are in need of sanitary products. Her idea of BleedFreeGirlChild was stimulated when she witnessed a lot of young girls skipping school because they couldn’t afford to buy sanitary towels.
“Menstruation is not a choice; it comes naturally whereas sex is a choice so sanitary towels should be free since condoms are free. I strongly believe that all young women should freely access sanitary products,” said Carol.
The campaign ‘bleed free’ aims to provide sanitary towels to immense number of young girls that cannot afford to buy sanitary towels which leads them to miss out on school. The bleed free campaign aims to change that.
The BleedFreeGirlChild initiative is mostly focused on educating young girls that it is okay to be on their periods and there is nothing to be ashamed of.
“It is in our hands as women to support and look out for each other because no one can understand the struggles we go through when we are on our periods,” concludes Carol.
