Earlier this month, Executive Mayor Cllr Sivuyile Ngodwana, marked 100 days in office.
Today he celebrated this milestone during the monthly council sitting as he presented achievements made as per the State of the City Address commitments made in April.
“Leading this People’s Government has not come easy but one thing for sure, all parties in this coalition have been pulling hard in one direction for the betterment of the lives of our residents,” Mayor Ngodwana declared in Council.
“The City of Ekurhuleni has had long-standing challenges with waste, however in the past 100 days, great strides have been made to stabilise the service.”
Some of the notable achievements, the mayor stated, include the delivery of four waste compactors which are already put to good use, while eight more are due to be received by the end of this month. Substantial work has been done in revamping and cleaning up landfill sites and ensuring that they are more user-friendly.
“A total of 100 illegal dumping sites have been cleared, while the City continues urging residents to keep those spaces clean,” said Mayor Ngodwana.
“Extensive work has also been done towards water security. Five water reservoirs and one tower have been completed and are now in the process of being connected to the water network. Five stormwater drainage systems have been revamped while about six major roadworks linking residential areas to major roads are nearing completion.”
Cllr Ngodwana added that The People’s Government continues to bring ease and development to the residents. He said over three million rand was spent to refurbish the Somhlolo multi-purpose taxi rank in Vosloorus. “This establishment in its current form, offers excellent space for small businesses and is very secure for commuters. I am very honoured to be leading a municipality with hard-working civil servants always putting residents first.”

Another notable achievement is the launch of the Mayoral Outreach Program called Masisebenzeni – People’s Government @Work, which signifies the commitment to improve service delivery through collaborative efforts. Through this program, the Mayor, and his team of MMCs visit various communities every second Friday to assess the state of service delivery, identify areas of interventions and unlock any bottlenecks identified. The executive also use the opportunity to engage with community members to listen and respond to their concerns.
In his first 100 days in office, the Mayor has taken the Masisebenzeni program to Thembisa, Katlehong, Daveyton, Tsakane and Kwa-Thema and will continue to roll out the program to other areas across the municipality. Tomorrow, the attention will be on Germiston from 09h00 until late.
