Five men found in possession of unlicensed firearms and dagga

Firing gunshots in our communities is constantly becoming a norm. On the 29th of July 2021, the KwaThema SAPS received an anonymous complaint about the gunshots which were discharged at a certain house in Barcelona along Mkhwanazi Street.

The police swiftly responded and when they arrived at the specified address, police found a group of men in the yard, and they all bolted as soon as they saw the police officers approaching them. However, the police managed to apprehend four men and detained them for questioning. Whilst being interviewed the suspects alleged that they were there to buy dagga and drugs. The police searched the house where the suspects were found. A 40 year old suspect was searched as well as the house and a 9mm CZ firearm with the serial number filed off was found in the premises along with a magazine and 7 live round of 9mm ammunition.

Another firearm was found on the ground near the place where the group of men congregated. The recovered firearm is a Llama cal. 32 which also has a filed off serial number, a magazine and 6 rounds of live ammunition; it was compiled as part of the evidence and it will be forwarded for ballistic testing to determine whether or not it has been used to commit any other crimes.

All five suspects were arrested and detained at Springs SAPS; they will soon appear in front of the Magistrate. KwaThema SAPS’ station commander Colonel Mareketle Thobejane applauded the swift response by her members as well as the community member who tipped off the police that led to the successful arrest and confiscation the firearms and the undisclosed amount of dagga.
