Gauteng Department of e-Government Celebrates 170 Young Trailblazers in ICT!

Empowering Tomorrow’s Digital Leaders

In a spectacular ceremony held at the prestigious University of Johannesburg on September 22, 2023, 170 bright young minds stepped into the limelight, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards becoming the future torchbearers of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolution. This transformative feat was made possible through a dynamic collaboration between the Gauteng Department of e-Government and the University of Johannesburg.

Igniting the Digital Flame

These remarkable young individuals embarked on an exhilarating year-long journey as part of the Gauteng Department of e-Government’s pioneering ICT and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMME) training program. Designed with a vision to empower the youth with indispensable ICT skills in the digital age, this program set its sights on incubating digital startups, mentoring aspiring digital entrepreneurs managing Small and Medium Enterprises, and nurturing the ICT talents of unemployed youth aged 14 to 35 through comprehensive training and mentorship.

A Diverse Spectrum of Achievement

Under the insightful guidance of the Department’s Deputy Director General (DDG) of Information, Communication, and Technology & Support Services (ICTSS), Mr. Castro Mosina, the program bore rich fruit. A staggering 103 graduates emerged from the crucible of the Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMME) Development Program. This specialized initiative aimed to further refine and amplify the skills and capabilities of these budding entrepreneurs within the dynamic landscape of business.

Additionally, 67 bright talents successfully completed the ICT Skills Development Fourth Industrial Training, which honed their skills to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), ensuring that they are well-equipped to navigate the digital frontier.

Spreading Opportunity Far and Wide

Castro Mosina articulated the Department’s commitment to the cause, stating, “The department continues to train and up-skill Gauteng youth who own small businesses, as well as expose them to the ICT sector. The program was extended to the townships of Gauteng across all five regions – Westrand, Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, and Tshwane – in order to equally distribute opportunities and ensure fairness. It is part of the department’s mandate to combat unemployment.”

This landmark program is a testament to the Gauteng Department of e-Government’s unwavering dedication to nurturing the talents of the youth and bridging the gap between education and employment. As these 170 bright graduates step into the world with their newfound knowledge and skills, they stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration for a brighter, digitally empowered future. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of education, mentorship, and opportunity.

The future is brighter with the Gauteng Department of e-Government leading the way, igniting the flames of innovation, and empowering the youth of today to shape the digital landscape of tomorrow.
