Gauteng Traffic Police arrested 38 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol

The Gauteng Traffic Police arrested thirty-eight (38) motorists over the weekend after being found driving under the influence of alcohol. The offenders were arrested in various parts of the province such as Mabopane, Vosloorus and Ennerdale policing precincts. The majority of drivers were arrested in Vosloorus during a law enforcement operation conducted in the precinct with the highest drunk driver recorded at 1:40 mg/1000 ml.

The transgressors are expected to appear at various magistrates’ courts on charges relating to driving under the influence of alcohol. The Gauteng Traffic Police has cautioned motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol. As we approach the festive season, law enforcement operations will be intensified in order to ensure that Gauteng roads are safe for all categories of road users. “Gauteng Traffic Police together with other law enforcement agencies will intensify drunk driving operations this festive season to ensure the safety of road users. All drivers who conduct themselves with impunity will be arrested to face the full might of law” said Sello Maremane, Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson.

“As part of creating awareness on road safety, the Department of Community Safety through its Road Safety Unit will continuously educate and sensitize drivers and passengers on their safety while driving or walking on Gauteng’s busy roads. The road safety activations will be conducted at various taxi ranks, shopping malls, freeways and schools on a daily basis,” added Sello Maremane.

The Gauteng Traffic Police call upon community members to report any driver who contravenes the road traffic rules and regulations to any law enforcement authority.
