GBV Survivors Empowered To Overcome Adversity And Drive Change

In an impactful initiative, the GEYODI unit within the Gauteng Department of e-Government recently organized a Women in Business program, specifically designed for women and girls who have bravely overcome Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and others from various backgrounds across the province. This inspiring session took place on October 3, 2023, at the Ithuba Centre in Munsieville.

The primary goal of this program was to equip women and girls with practical skills to attain financial independence, fostering their ability to contribute positively to their communities. Furthermore, it aimed to provide a holistic support system for GBV survivors, breaking the cycle of financial dependency that often keeps victims trapped in abusive and potentially life-threatening relationships. The event featured experts from various business sectors and government entities who provided invaluable guidance and support.

Notably, the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) shared vital information to assist female entrepreneurs and those considering entering the world of business. Their support included services related to company registration, SARS compliance, assistance with tender documents, funding research and facilitation, and one-on-one consultations with business advisors.

To facilitate access to government business opportunities, Ms. Ivy Mashaba, a representative from the Gauteng Provincial Treasury, highlighted the importance of registration on the Central Supplier Database and the fulfilment of mandatory requirements.

During the program, Ms. Bibi Matentshi from the GEYODI unit within e-Gov addressed the profound effects of trauma and domestic violence. She offered insights on coping with traumatic experiences, emphasized the significance of seeking professional help, and provided guidance on effective business branding for women embarking on their Small and Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The session also provided a platform for women to share their testimonials and experiences regarding gender-based violence.

The discussions conducted throughout the session were enlightening and informative, creating a safe space for women to open up, seek advice, and offer support to one another. It fostered a sense of community, solace, and empowerment, ultimately resulting in resounding success. Participants, facilitators, and organizers unanimously agreed that the program left the women feeling empowered, confident, and equipped with the skills and knowledge to take control of their lives and embark on their entrepreneurial journeys.
