Investigation launched: classroom ceiling incident

Eighteen grade 6 kids got hurt when the roof in their classroom at Umthambeka Primary School in Tembisa fell on Tuesday, 27 February 2024.

The Gauteng Education Department said in a statement that the kids who got hurt were quickly looked after at a nearby medical place.

MEC for Education Matome Chiloane said he’s very worried about what happened, saying it’s sad that kids in our school got hurt like this.

“We hope all the kids who got hurt get better quickly. Also, we ask SGB members to always keep an eye out for any problems at their schools and tell the department,” he said.

The department mentioned that two kids are still in hospital while the others are getting better at home.

The reason for the accident is still being checked.

“We’re checking what happened. We’ll get more information from the School Management Team, School Governing Body, and the district,” they said.

The department has sent a team to the school to offer counselling to the kids who need it.
