Man rescued in the stormwater drain systems

A 56-year old patient was recovered from the stormwater drain system exactly at 16H30 on the N12 eastbound in Alberton. The man sustained a left leg fracture.

Media liaison officer of the Ekurhuleni News under the emergency management services, William Ntladi said the rescue technicians were on sight after a call was received at 11:35 yesterday from a member of the public who reported a patient being trapped in one of the stormwater drain systems, just opposite the N12 freeway Eastbound.

“The incident was reported through the EMPD officers who at the same time cascaded the message over to firefighters. The rescue technicians went into the trench to rescue the patient who responded positively while they were engaging with him,” said Ntladi.

According to the patient, the incident happened on Sunday around 22H00. He couldn’t see the drain as it was too dark to see walking in the tall grass.

He was treated on the scene by the paramedics and transported to the nearest medical facility.
