MMC for Water, Energy and Sanitation Cllr Senzi Sibeko has launched the city’s Blue Drop Water Quality Campaign at Driefontein informal settlement in Delmore Park, Boksburg on Tuesday, 31 May.
The launch follows the release of 2022 Blue Drop Progress Report early this year that certifies the city’s water quality as having achieved excellent microbiological compliance and good chemical compliance. The city was also rated for its adequately aligned monitoring programmes. This indicates the city’s water may not pose health risks to the consumers.
As part of the Blue Drop Water Quality Campaign, Rand Water contributed 5 000, 25-litre water bottles that will be donated across the city to ensure residents safely and conveniently store water.
MMC Sibeko further announced that Driefontein’s informal settlement will soon be re-blocked and that will come with piped water to each dwelling to do away with the communal water taps.
“The city continues its efforts to broaden the access to the city’s Blue Drop certified water. The aim is to ensure that each family has its own tap.
“However, residents are reminded of the responsibility to use water sparingly at all times,” MMC Sibeko said.
The City has maintained its Blue Drop status, which is awarded by the National Department of Water and Sanitation for excellence in water quality management.
The city will, through the Blue Drop Water Quality Campaign, visit various areas across Ekurhuleni to educate residents about the need to conserve water.
