The MMC for Health Social Development Bokang Lethoko has urged expectant mothers not to delay their first visits to the clinic as soon as they become aware of their pregnancies.
In showing her confidence in the services provided by the city’s clinics, the MMC, who is a new mother herself, shares the pleasant experience she had during a surprise antenatal visit at the Germiston Clinic.
“Our clinic doors are open to everyone, and I strongly encourage women to visit any of our clinics as soon as they suspect that they are pregnant and certainly within their first trimester to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
“Visiting the clinic as soon as one suspects that they are pregnant will help in detecting any abnormalities or health issues in the early stages of pregnancy,” MMC Lethoko said.
The antenatal care attendance provides:
· Free HIV testing and voluntary counselling (VCT)
· Early recognition of danger signs in pregnancy and post delivery
· Birth preparedness
· Self-care including nutrition and personal hygiene
· Information on the role the father can play as well as the family
Amongst the services highlighted to the MMC during her visit was MomConnect, an initiative that provides support and education on maternal health issues using cell phone-based technologies integrated into maternal and child health services.
The MMC who has now given birth to a healthy baby continues to receive messages guiding her on caring for the baby, she encourages other women to sign up for MomConnect by simply dialling *134*550# from their cell phone to receive SMSes every month reminding them of their next clinic appointment.
