Meals On Wheels Community Services (MOWCS) South Africa CEO has announced that the non-profit organisation will be hosting cook-a-thons nationally in the 9 provinces for World Hunger Day. The cook-a-thons aim at preparing and serving 20 000 meals from the 23rd of May to the 27th of May 2022. World Hunger day is another initiative that seeks to address issues of hunger and malnutrition.
“690 million people are living in chronic hunger globally; an additional 130 million people may be pushed to increase the number because of the Covid 19 pandemic. Of that number, 19 million are from South Africa alone. As a non-profit organization that specializes but is not limited to providing meals to the destitute, we believe that days like World Hunger Day clearly showcase the rising need of coming together to uproot the pandemic of poverty and hunger in our country and beyond,” said the CEO.
MOWCS in partnership with PEPSICO and Capitec Bank Limited will be providing 20 000 cooked meals in all the provinces to ensure that people do not go to bed hungry. The organisation will mainly focus on the areas that are poverty-stricken in the provinces. This will be ongoing support in KZN as MOWCS has been feeding since the flood disaster began. MOWCS commits to be on the ground to ensure that the affected communities in KZN do not have to worry about where their next meal will come from whilst housed at the displacement camps. MOWCS has had to increase the number of meals they feed from one meal to 3 times in a day. This has been made possible by strategic partners like PEPISCO and Capitec Limited Bank who continuously donate to the organisation and make our response effective. To date MOWCS has served more than 200 000 meals in KZN alone,” said Nelisa.
All these initiatives are rooted in the company’s values, which is to fight hunger whilst eliminating dependency syndrome, through skills development, farming, and food gardens at schools and communities. We hope that our contribution will inspire the people of South Africa to continue to find new ways of growing their communities and living healthier lives, concluded Mabenge”.
The organisation is calling on more strategic partners to come on board beyond World Hunger Day to ensure that hunger is no longer the pandemic that it is in our country and globally.
