On Thursday 18 May 2023 at around 10:05, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) Officers, visited a shop on the corner of Rietfontein and Eight Street in Boksburg North, where illicit cigarettes worth two hundred thousand Rands (R200 000) were confiscated.
Following a call from a reliable source about a shop allegedly owned by undocumented nationals that were suspected of selling illicit cigarettes. The DEU Officers proceeded to the shop and, after searching the shop, they discovered twenty-one (21) boxes of illegal cigarettes, with an estimated value of two-hundred thousand Rands (R200 000), were confiscated and taken to the Boksburg North Police station, for safekeeping.
The four (4) male suspects between the ages of 23 to 36 years found in the shop were arrested and detained at the Boksburg North police station. The suspects, facing charges of dealing in illegal cigarettes, will appear at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon and may face additional charges under the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002).
