Through play, Children learn and practice many basic social Skills. They develop a sense of self, learn to interact with other children, how to make friends, how to role-play and many more skills and this has been repeatedly confirmed by numerous scientific research conducted by different researchers in different credible institutions all over the world and these researches dated back in the 1920s and even before then as well as in the recent years and the conclusions of these researches are the same, children learn and develop through play .
Let me list the basic six stages of play, these stages were also confirmed by the classic scientific study of how play develops children conducted at the Institute of Child Development in Minnesota by the Researchers, Mildred Parten.
Parten’s Six stages of play include the following:
- Unoccupied play
- Solitary play
- Onlooker play
- Parallel play
- Associative play and
- Cooperative play
It is very important to note that each child develops at his or her own pace, so children of the same age may not show exactly the same type of play and results.
