SALGA hosts 6th Annual seminar

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) hosted the 6th Annual Local Government Governance & Performance Management Seminar, on the 23rd – 24th November 2023, at the Birchwood Hotel & Conference Centre in Boksburg, Gauteng. The seminar equipped local governments with the essential tools and insights needed to enhance their responsiveness, ensuring a resilient and adaptable approach in the ever-evolving landscape of local governance.

This two-day event themed Driving Governance Improvement to Affirm High Performing and Citizen-Centered Municipalities saw delegates from municipalities, professional bodies, institutions of higher learning, SETAs, and government departments converge sharing insights, collaborate, and collectively advance the trajectory of effective governance.

Lukhona Mnguni, Research Director at the Riviona Circle, and ToivoMuofhe, Chief Director at COGTA, hosted the seminar, featuring a keynote address by Professor Sibusiso Vil-Nkomo, the Executive Dean of the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public & International Affairs. The seminar blended thought leadership insights, keynote presentations, case studies, panel discussions, and simulated demonstrations to engage delegates and encourage knowledge exchange.

As the leading voice of South African municipalities, SALGA formulates and implements a range of leadership-focused interventions geared towards bolstering municipal capacity to effectively tackle the challenges confronting local government. Through the SALGA Centre for Leadership and Governance (SCLG), these interventions, including the seminar, address the need for enhanced governance, ethical leadership, and proficient oversight and management within municipalities. The 6th Annual Local Government Governance & Performance Management Seminar aimed to improve governance standards.

Rio Nolutshungu, Chief Officer: Municipal Capabilities and Governance, explained: “The 6th Annual Local Government Governance and Performance Management Seminar is an important platform for municipal leaders to gain knowledge, share insights, and chart a path toward more efficient and citizen-centric governance. It is vital that we equip municipalities with the tools and insights they need to improve governance and better navigate challenges. SALGA is committed to empowering municipalities and enhancing the lives of our citizens through excellent local governance.”
