The South African Policing Union(SAPU) in Gauteng has learnt with dismay of the murder of 2 Police officials
in separate incidents over the Long weekend. It is reported that on Thursday 15 June 2023, Kliptown Police in
the Soweto area received a report of a man that was shot multiple times inside a car. On arrival, it was discovered
that the deceased is a Detective Sergeant working under the Task Team in Kliptown. The motive for the murder
is unknown and the suspect(s) of this gruesome act are at large, no arrests have been reported as yet.
On a separate incident in Krugersdorp on 16 June 2023, on what seems like a Domestic Violence/Gender Based
Violence (GBV) act, a 44-year-old female Sergeant was murdered in her place of residence. The victim
succumbed to the multiple bullet wounds and she was found dead on the bed, on the ground, was her
boyfriend who laying there with a bullet wound under his chin also dead on the scene.
The Province has lost 2 Police officers, adding to the already declining number of Police by death due to different
reasons.
SAPU would like to call on all community members to assist the Police in ensuring that the perpetrators of these
horrid and barbaric acts of Police murders are brought to book.
We call on the boots on the ground to do all they can to find the murderers of Sgt Maluleke and ensure that
Justice is served in its entirety.
As a Union, we are disheartened by the Gauteng Police Commissioners’ silence in such incidents of murder and
suicide that have hit the Province very hard. The morale of the members is already at an alarmingly low rate and
the lack of support from the top only adds to the instability of our members.
We call on the Gauteng Police Commissioner to be out there to encourage his members and show comfort for
the multiple losses suffered due to the murders and deaths of our Police Officers.
Lastly, we call on SAPS to do more on GBV and Police murders as we as an organization have already declared
that we say No to GBV and our stance is very clear on Police Killings that it should be declared treason so that
those found guilty of such crimes should face harsher sentences for if this continues, we will have no police
officers to protect us; so let us Protect the Protectors.
