The Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Sivuyile Ngodwana hosted a farewell lunch for the City of Ekurhuleni Athletics Club to participate in this year’s Comrades Ultra Marathon.
Speaking at the send-off function, Cllr Ngodwana encouraged the team to go out there at the weekend and make Ekurhuleni proud. “You are already the pride of the city and finishing the race and bringing back the medals will be the cherry on top.”
Echoing the Mayor’s sentiments was the Acting City Manager Thokozani Maseko who encouraged more female athletes to join the team.
“We (city management) are firm believers that a healthy body harbours a healthy mind and therefore, your dedication is motivating us to take to the streets and follow suit,” he emphasised.
Dignitaries from the City, including the Members of the Mayoral Committee expressed their utmost support for the 35 employees who will participate in the Marathon on 11 June.
The Comrades Marathon is the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon. The race is approximately 89km and it is an annual event taking place in KwaZulu-Natal, between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
This is the 11th year that the Ekurhuleni Athletics Club is participating in the race.
