SIMMER AND JACK LANDFILL SITE TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO FIRE

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Services (DEMS) team is on-site at Simmer and Jack Landfill site extinguishing a raging fire that engulfed the facility on Sunday evening, 15 May 2022.

The facility will be temporarily closed off to the public and all patrons are advised to utilize nearby alternative mini dumpsites and landfill sites such as the Weltevreden landfill site in Brakpan, Platkop near Heidelberg and Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema until further notice.

There are no reported damages to property nor any fatalities. The fire is currently restricted to the waste body at the working face of the landfill site and the city’s officials are working tirelessly to restrict the fire while extinguishing it.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The City apologises for the inconvenience this may cause
