City of Ekurhuleni, October 12, 2023 — A tragic collision between two vehicles at the intersection of Osborne Road and Nitrogen Road in Buhle Park resulted in sixteen passengers, including two drivers, being hospitalized. The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, October 12, 2023, at 07H54.
Firefighters from the Wadeville fire station were promptly dispatched to the scene, responding to the emergency call. When they arrived, they discovered two occupants of the taxi, the driver, and a passenger, trapped inside the wreckage. To ensure their safety, the firefighters used the Jaws of Life equipment to extricate them.
The first vehicle involved was a taxi, carrying a total of fourteen passengers along with the driver. The second vehicle was a hatchback, with only the driver on board. This unfortunate collision resulted in a total of sixteen casualties.
Of these, both drivers and one passenger sustained serious injuries, necessitating immediate medical attention. All the casualties, irrespective of the severity of their injuries, were promptly transported to the nearest hospital for further care and medical treatment.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation by officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD). As a result of the accident, Osborne Road was temporarily closed for safety reasons, pending a thorough inspection and cleanup.
