The EMPD embark on back to school transport campaign

On Tuesday 17 January 2023 at 09:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Social Crime Prevention Unit officers, visited Qedusizi and Fred Habedi Primary Schools, in the Kwa-Thema area to educate staff and learners, on school learner transport safety.

With the high number of pedestrian-vehicle accidents in the past few weeks, the EMPD saw a great need, to come up with an awareness campaign. The move is aimed at teaching children, how to approach road traffic signals and to cross the roadway, safely.

The continuous efforts to engage in campaigns of this nature will assist to curb the number of road fatalities and help keep communities safe. Furthermore, members conducted law enforcement in front of the school, to ensure motorists and vehicles are in compliance with the National Road Traffic Act (93/1996) and a number of written notices, were issued, to non-complying offenders. Working together with other law enforcers and the Community Safety Department, the EMPD will ensure that schools participate in scholar patrol programs.

The EMPD urges motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they exercise caution on roadways at all times.
